TBT: Water Fowl

Why do you stay
common water fowl?
In the freezing, dry air
where ice abounds and
the river runs cold.

Do you not want to join
your kin? They are down South
on warm, sunny beaches.
There’s life where
the grass isn’t brown thin,
so why not surround yourself
in revelry, merriment,
and gorgeous women
rather than being alone.

Why do you stay
common water fowl?
In the freezing, dry air
where ice abounds and
the river runs cold.

Come! Join us!
There’s plenty to go around
to keep you entertained.
We’ve got live music and games,
volleyball, frisbee, you name it,
or you can bask in the sun and
warm up after travelling
through ice and snow,
relax with a cold one or a spliff,
or take a swim in warm waters
for a change.

We ask you:
why do you stay
common water fowl?
In the freezing, dry air
where ice abounds and
the river runs cold.

You like to be alone,
we understand, but
we don’t want you to be lonely.
Guaranteed you’ll find a hookup,
doesn’t matter how you swing it;
we’re all the same species, right?
We’re all birds.
Besides, it’s more fun if
you get a flock together.
Maybe your future lover is here;
you won’t know ‘til you come!

So,
why do you stay
common water fowl?
In the freezing, dry air
where ice abounds and
the river runs cold.

Fine. Don’t come.
You’re only missing out on
drinks that can get you plastered,
the finest dope that’ll get you seein’ colors,
and all the babes you want!
No wonder you don’t have friends,
you’re stuck in that frozen wasteland of
prudes and religious types.

Let’s not invite him ever again.

Why the hell do you stay
common water fowl?
In the freezing, dry air
where ice abounds and
the river runs cold.

“I like it up here.”

I wrote this for a freelancing request on fiverr.com for my poetry gig. The buyer wanted me to write an original poem on any topic in the standard verse/chorus format because he likes writing songs based on poetry; this structure would make it easier for him.

This was written a month ago, when I had time to really try the whole freelance writing thing.
